Overview

Working closely with a private client, dwell design was commissioned to refurbish and convert a disused chapel into a luxury 4 bedroom private residence in Chichester. The chapel is naturally split into three distinct volumes – the main chapel has been converted into a double-height central living space, while the meeting rooms and community areas provide smaller family and support spaces. The conversion features a bespoke staircase, a customised breakfast bar and an elevated living room space. Carefully working with the existing building fabric, dwell design removed elements of the ground floor to create volume and draw attention to the carefully restored metal roof structure. A vaulted ceiling to the living areas, combines period features with stylish contemporary design and an open-plan feel.

The project has restored a disused former chapel providing a dynamic new space organised by the insertion of two crisp timber stair cases leading off to the bedroom accommodation creating an interesting dialogue between old and new. Due to the building’s former use, it required working closely with the planning authority to obtain consent. A lot of the original period features have been kept intact to make the best use of the space and let the original character shine. The project has been designed to maintain and enhance its distinct character and the client is enjoying experiencing the dramatic space that has been created.
