Unfortunately, for the vast the majority of us balancing the budget will be an on-going and ever present concern. Even for those of us lucky enough to feel comfortable in managing our income and expenses, an unexpected turn of events can throw things into turmoil.

Maybe you want to save a bit more for the future, or maybe you’re saving up for something special, in any case it’s always prudent to cut costs where you can.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of money saving tips that should allow you to reduce cost in every room of your home.

Read on to find out how…

1. Kitchen

We kick off our cost-saving count down with the kitchen. Grow your own herbs and enjoy tasty cuisine at low cost – this maybe a minor saving, but as they say every little counts.

Potted herbs placed around the kitchen will look great too!

2. Living room

Save money when furnishing your living room by shopping around for a little flea market furniture. It may be time consuming, but if you’re lucky you’ll find a bargain, and the finished room will benefit from the time you’ve put into furnishing it as opposed to buying all the furniture from one big chain store.

Alternatively, upcycling could be a great way to furnish your living room at low cost. Upcycling involves repurposing old materials to create something new and of higher value; some upclycled products can be expensive, but not if you do it yourself.

3. Dining room

When it comes to decorating your dining room, it’s hard to find better flooring than hardwood. However, hardwood is very expensive, and modern laminate flooring can imitate the material excellently at a fraction of the cost. Laminate flooring is also easy to install so you can do it without professional help, and it's durable; meaning it will likely last longer than other alternatives such as carpet.

4. Bathroom

If you suffer from a small bathroom, then you may want to expand it, but obviously this will be very costly. An alternative might be to improve the lighting to increase the feeling of space, but again this will still be expensive. To circumvent this problem purchase a large mirror, and place it in such a way so as to maximise the amount of light reflected, this will increase the amount of light in the room and make it feel more spacious.

5. Bedroom

Build your own bedroom shelves to save space and money. The freestanding bookshelf pictured above has been beautifully crafted from old ladders, but the design need not be so complicated; simple wall-mounted brackets available from any hardware store and a piece of wood cut to the appropriate size will do.

6. Garden/terrace

Building on point number two, old – and cheap – wooden pallets can easily be upcycled and transformed into fantastic garden furniture!
