Now that we’re all spending much more time at home, a few of us have certainly reconsidered the function, practicality, and popularity of various rooms. And while we are not saying that there is no space for a formal dining room in the modern home, many of us may have decided that dedicating an entire room to socialising and fancy dinner parties is not a current necessity.

And, thus, various options suddenly arise as to what to do with all that newly available space…

1. Home office

We are willing to bet that quite a few households have already turned various underutilised rooms in their houses into home offices. Of course there are perks to working from home, like the fact that you get to be your own interior designer for your at-home work zone.

This also works a treat if your dining room / home office is located near the entrance, as it spares clients a walk through your house.

2. Guest bedroom

Since guest bedrooms don’t generally require much space, you can easily turn even a tiny dining room into a stylish little overnight sleeping spot. The trick would be to opt for space-saving furnishings, like a bed with built-in nightstands.

And since the average guest bedroom doesn’t have closets, a simple six-drawer dresser can be more than adequate.

3. Kids’ playroom

If your home usually consists of multiple toys strewn everywhere, this should be great news for you: you can move all that clutter into a whole new room and turn it into clever storage for little ones to enjoy. It’s especially practical if your dining room is close to your kitchen, meaning you can keep one eye and ear on them.

Just be sure to set up clear storage spots and the relevant cleanup rules!

4. Home gym

You don’t even need an air-borne disease to be inspired to craft your own private workout space at home. And setting up a home gym is easier than you think.

Although walls of mirrors and rows of workout machines would be great, they’re not necessary. Just ensure you have room for your large exercise machine, like a bike or treadmill. Make space for a floor mat dedicated to stretching/yoga, and maybe throw in a storage bench for other workout goodies, like weights.

5. Library / reading room

Bookworms, this one’s heaven! Transform your old dining space into a reading oasis where you can curl up with your favourite reading material. Adorn an entire wall with deep bookcases, scatter a few on shelves, and even stock up a storage basket or two for emphasis and visual style.

Complete the fantasy with a comfy seating/lounging spot (whether that’s a charming beanbag or elegant swivel chair is up to you), a side table, proper (and layered) lighting, and your décor accessories of choice.

6. Indoor garden

Not so much garden room as indoor garden, but still: turning an interior space into a lush oasis of potted pretties is quite unique. Just a hint to save your wood/lacquer tabletop: make sure it is properly sealed to prevent water damage, or stock up on padded waterproof cloths in case of spills.

7. Extra living room

An extra living room is particularly valuable if you’re looking to escape your busy household and your chaotic existing living room. Why not make this one a tad fancier by keeping the telly out and ensuring something gorgeous to look at, whether it’s an existing fireplace, a big window with a dreamy garden view, or some fine art on your walls?

8. Home bar

If ever there was a safer time to drink at home, it’s now. From high-top tables and built-in home bars to mobile bar carts, there are so many fun ways to craft your own cocktail space. Stock up on your choice of drinks, glasses, and bar accessories (cocktail shaker, modern corkscrew, etc.), and enjoy your own happy hour(s).
