The Omega Speedmaster is one of the most beloved and iconic chronographs of all time. This dependable timepiece was used by the Apollo 11 astronauts during the 1969 moon mission, and remains the only watch to be officially certified for space travel. Throughout the years, there have been many different versions of this legendary watch. However, the vintage versions remain some of the most sought after and valued timepieces.

Although the Speedmaster has seen some revisions, its design has remained relatively unchanged. It is available in a range of materials, dial designs, and special editions. Many of these watches are made to commemorate important events in history, such as the launch of the first moon landing. There are even affordable models to choose from.

The first Speedmasters were created in 1957, and the first specimens were produced before the Moon landing. These are known as pre-Moonwatches by enthusiasts. For these watches, the case backs had a circular engraving, the wording "Speedmaster," and a hippocampus medallion. In addition, there were several variations of bezels, dials, and caseback inscriptions.

Early models of the Speedmaster were more expensive than later references. They were also fitted with a Caliber 321 movement, which is a little outdated nowadays. Later models feature a domed dial, which looks cleaner and sleeker, but lacks vintage appeal. On the upside, the domed dial offers a smooth transition between surfaces.

The Speedmaster was launched alongside the Seamaster 300 and Railmaster. Each had a similar dial design, including arrow-tipped hour hands and an engraved tachymeter ring. Some of the early versions had recessed edging on the dial, while others had a baton second hand.

When NASA asked Omega to create a watch for space travel, they chose the Speedmaster. Omega developed the first version of the watch, and it was launched alongside the Seamaster 300 in 1957. Since that time, the brand has released dozens of different variants of this classic timepiece.

Omega released the Omega Speedmaster Mark II in 2014, and it updated its signature design. It also added a splash of color to its dial. The original tonneau-shaped case remained, but the chronograph was replaced with a Co-Axial Calibre 3330, a self-winding movement. A new generation of Speedmasters features a domed dial that offers a clean look.

After decades of hiatus, Omega has once again brought back some of its most popular timepieces. These new watches are not only reissues, but also contemporary models.
