The outside entryway to a home or apartment is important; it is the singular point of a house where the home's plan coalesces to welcome you home, or welcome guests back.

The front entrance is also, at bottom, a functional area, allowing you access inside after a long day's work or a holiday away and ensuring your security once inside. This means the front entrance should be simple to access, sturdy and comfortable.

So today's list of 14 fabulous home entrances by homify has been compiled according to high standards of basic design, uniqueness and ease-of-use. We'll start with an entrance within an entrance, a gem of Asian architecture. Let's take a look…

1. Double entrance

An entrance that is actually a room, sans one wall. Angled and clean white walls are heavily spotlighted, leading to the front entrance made of thick glass – how unique!

2. Fire and water

A long, wide river pond with fire on top, emanating from what can only be described as 'a water fireplace', guests are sure to walk into this house a little breathless.

3. On the way inside

Often a front entrance is all about the way there. Here, beautiful white cement slabs dot a pathway, bordered by yellow knob lights and lush green grass, to a blue glass front door framed by pretty pink and emerald bushes.

4. Entrance, reflected

This unusual abode boasts an entrance as distinctive as they come: a fully reflective mirror shines out views of the beautiful desert but also lets in the view from the inside!

5. Sticks and stones

A medieval inspired home here has a rounded inside foyer, fortified with red bricks and grey stones on the outside, and a semi-circle path lined with tall twiggy sticks guides your way into this magical feeling abode.

6. The piazza

Here is an entrance that looks out onto its very own piazza, complete with two patterned ground stone, in a pattern rotating around a centre light bulb and roses.

7. Infinite entry

Modernists should love this one: an ellipse frames the entryway area, which is itself grand with double doors and plenty of yellow lighting. And additional half ellipse frames the staircase windows for a really singular modern design.

8. The unexpected door

When this door is closed, it blends in, easily fooling folks that it is just wall. For this, we give this entrance all the points for security. Just a little nudge--and the right key, of course--and this beautiful cherry mahogany door sweeps open, tilting halfway into the home because its hinges are centred, rather than on the left or right.

9. Zen entrance

Palatial yet peaceful without ostentation, this front entrance features a half roof with a square hole cut to give sunlight to the beautiful, bonsai pruned bush at the centre of the entry area. The greys, whites and greens work to make this space look effortless!

10. Garden entrance

An eclectic Asian garden as pictured here, complete with large vases, sumptuous sculptures and lanterns, is sure to make guests coo.

11. A tropical greeting

Time for a twist with this lush, tropical entrance, surrounded with exotic foliage that hangs from an un-sanded wood terrace. A gorgeous burnt mosaic tiling has been laid on the patio floor. You can decide to enter or, perhaps have a swing on the wooden swing bench.

12. Modern vibes

This entryway is modern and yet sends off ephemeral vibes. It has transitions from rosewood to river rock and then to the will-o-the-wisp-like tall grass, all astutely alight with white and purples. And the award for finest front door goes to this house--horizontally placed fine woods are devastatingly beautiful.

13. The fire pit's out front

An entrance with large cobble stones and a circular fire pit with seating made entirely of red marble brick. You'll make your way inside eventually…

14. House of spades

This last entryway is a wood patio carved in the same shape and the eves and central overhang, in a spade-shape. Even before you're inside, you're inundated with abundant elegance.
