The Homestyle Toto Architects have fast accumulated accolades for their ability to create cosy, homey homes that are ideal for families.

The house we tour today is just one such of their homes, which has been designed in a modern Sacndinavian style on a piece of property big enough for kids to spend a bit of time outside.

Inside, things are designed to suit a sociable and comfortable family life, including wholesome, easy-to-clean materials and design ideas that fit most budgets. So let's take a took, starting with the kitchen.

The high ceilinged kitchen

A kitchen of real heights, this one. The ceiling of the main portion of this kitchen is the ceiling of the house itself, two floors up, so, combined with the sliding doors that lead onto the outside yard area, this space has plenty of light and fresh, circulating air--ideal for a house filled with little ones.

The particulars of the kitchen itself are impressive: a Scandi-style has been used, meaning simple cabinetry of cool greys and whites with seamlessly placed modern appliances. The most thoughtful feature in here though: the protective glass partition around the stovetop to prevent kids from touching the hot stove!

The living nook

Useful and beautiful built-in bookshelves feature around the main window in this television-less family room that has a projector instead.

Light, unprocessed wood floors match the light grey walls and produce a soft, warm effect against the green and blue sofas. And if the light from the open kitchen and the large window aren't enough, a cube-shaped skylight brings in even more natural light all the way from the roof.

Interactive stairs

Here again we see the architects have really thought about what would make a great family home, where kids would be lucky to grow up.

The stairs, instead of stolid and purely functional, have been turned into interactive areas, with shelves and a bench on the landing and a slide on the side of the last staircase. Aesthetically, the rich light pinewood looks delightful and warm.

An organiser for organisers

Anyone with kids know that keeping their things organised is as difficult as keeping them organised, and so the foyer at the house's side entrance has been injected with some extra built-in storage shelving, plenty of hooks and places for shoes.

The floor has been covered with a gorgeous, stain-hiding, muddled grey hexagon mosaic. Lastly, we love this bright blue door with its old-style glass pane and crystal knob – very fun!

The front paddle pool

The back kitchen sliding door opens onto this handsome patio, built entirely of polished, knotty cherry wood. What makes this back deck even more loveable is the little hot tub/paddle pool that has been installed at its corner, ideal for filling and entertaining the children on spring and summer afternoons, while the parents enjoy a nice glass on the deck. All-in-all, homestyletoto have proven in this project that they know how to create solid, thoughtful family homes.
