Is your kitchen small and you have no idea how to exploit every centimetre in a functional manner? Do not worry! On this occasion, we share some thoughts of what you can do to make your kitchen fit everything you want to accommodate, even the small details and at the same time be incredibly functional!

Sometimes a little ingenuity and creativity go a long way when attempting to create comfortable and visually spacious rooms in our homes. Of course, the ktichen is no exception. This takes time and dedication – but remember, this is the space in your home that will feed your mind, body and soul. Ready? Let's get going! Here at homify we know small kitchens are a normal, daily reality – that's why we're up for the challenge!

1. Merging spaces

One way to take advantage of the limited space in a kitchen, and more so if the whole house is too small, is to integrate or merge rooms. We see it in the picture, where a dining room has been incorporated into a long, narrow kitchen.

If you decide on this concept for your kitchen, take an interior designer tip and be sure to follow the same design and colour scheme so the dining room and kitchen are harmoniously integrated.

2. A compact design

To optimize and maximise space in your kitchen, remember that everything should always fit and accommodate the right space.

If you have the possibility or are still in the phase of choosing or designing the kitchen, we recommend you choose one that is compact and functional where you can perform all cooking activities in a space of one or two metres!

3. A multifunctional bar

A multifunctional bar is one that works for proper food preparation, eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as socialising.

This kitchen bar also includes a four-to-six burner stove-top and it still leaves plenty of room to seat three to four people for nights of entertaining.

4. Check the lighting!

This is imperative in any room in any small home. Lighting can make or break a space and the last thing any homeowner needs or wants is a dark and gloomy kitchen.

This small kitchen has provided a large-scale window from the top of the countertop to almost the full height of the ceiling – both lightening and brightening this small, cute kitchen.

5. A multipurpose island

Is it a cooking area, breakfast bar socialising area or perfect storage unit? Well, when done correctly a multipurpose island can be all three!

Not only does this island provide all of the above, but it also works as a natural and seamless barrier, separating this small kitchen space from the rest of the home.

6. L-form and shelves adaptable for corners

If the width and length of your kitchen are incredibly similar, then an L-form is perfect for you. This will allow you to fully extend cabinets to the widest possible angle, while maintaining a decent amount of legroom for comfort.

Wrap-around cabinets also take care of corner space, like seen here!

7. Details that make you smile and cook with pleasure

Besides maximising every centimetre of space and every corner, you also need to remember that it's the details that will make your kitchen fun, enjoyable and one-of-a-kind. This chalkboard wall is perfect for doodles, placing recipes and menus for guests to be informed for for little inspiring messages to wake your family up in the morning and keep the positive attitude flowing. Also, don't forget other details like platters of fresh fruit and cute, matching dishes.

These small and functional kitchens were fantastic right? Check out more of them that are fully-equipped, small and design-worthy here at homify!
