It's amazing to think that at one time, people couldn't cover their brick walls fast enough.  Whether it was covering (badly) in drywall, plaster, or (yuck) wallpaper!  Now, homeowners and designers alike have seen the beauty that brick withholds, even in a crumbling, demented state!

The transition from hating brick walls to loving brick halls has even come so far that homeowners are buying faux-brick overlays to create the illusion of exposed brick walls in their home.  If you're lucky enough to have brick walls within the interior or your home, we fully suggest that you make the most of them with the ideas we have listed below. Our ideas will help those with freshly-made brick walls, or the oldest of old – and ranging in styles from industrial to antique and rustic!

Partially cover it with cement for an antique look

If the brick in your home seems like too much, you want a change, or your simply want a rustic or antiqued look – look no further than simple cement.  Cement can be one of the most cost-effective options when covering exposed brick, and you can even do it yourself.  The great part about creating an antiqued look with cement is that if mistakes are made, it adds to the look even more!

This bedroom is a near perfect example of how exposing raw materials and working with several textures can really make a space stand out.  From the rustic timbers, to the old and imperfect exposed brick and the rugged cement walls – this bedroom represents what it means to be industrial/exposed/rustic!  The exposed hanging lights also add a perfect touch to this otherwise, antiqued space!

Both bricks and larger stones are the key to creating a perfect rustic/modern environment – like seen here!

Paint it white if you just want to keep the texture

Some designers will always tell you – never paint over brick! We understand the sentiment that you should appreciate the materials your home offers you (or forces you to work with) but, if exposed red brick simply isn't your style, feel free to change it up!

When painting brick we do suggest that you always keep it white.  White will be most versatile with any styles, furnishings and interior decor.  White colour will also expose the textures of the bricks the most, which is what you really want here!

Give an industrial look to the surrouding space

Whether you're in an old cafe, or an older home – even a loft apartment – pairing bricks up with industrial decor features will always be a great look.  When brick buildings and homes were originally being built, these items were the original types of items that would have been featured in such places.  It's no wonder why exposed piping, ceiling beams, over-sized windows and industrial-style lighting look so great with brick – you're restoring these spaces to their former glory!

Want an extra touch for the ultimate industrial space? Once you're done exposing your materials like pipes and plumping, as well as ceiling beams and lamps – think about cement flooring.  It's durable, sustainable and usually quite affordable!

Give them a deteriorated/grunge appearance

If you have bricks that are somewhat newer in design and construction, consider making them look older!  There are plenty of overlay and faux-brick options that can give you the same look as pictured here!  These bricks offer variety in style, colour and texture, which is what you should want in your brick wall as well!

There are even specific tools and chemicals you can use to create an antiqued look!  Of course, always be careful with chemicals that deteriorate any type of material and if you feel unsafe, start chipping at your bricks yourself!  It's also cheap and rather easy to throw up some old mortar or cement on random areas of the wall for the ultimate used affect!

Add dark wood furniture for a masculine touch

Brick is great for homeowners and designers because it almost always matches any furnishings and decor.  Just like stark, white walls, it's incredibly versatile and this is good news for you! Bricks can be great for a boho chic looks, minimalism, Scandinavian design and even a more masculine look.

For a more masculine-feel to your space, consider dark wood furnishings and a combination of leather couches, chairs and accessories!  This example is wonderfully interesting because the tinted brick provides a great offset to the dark wood shelves, lighter wood desk and leather desk chair.

Re-clad some parts with contrasting bricks

One of those homeowners that's thinking about painting over your brick? Ok, then we want you to consider one more option! Re-cladding certain areas with contrasting brick colours! This can be a super-affordable option with great style benefits.

The two contrasting brick walls in this home are absolutely fabulous together – one is original and one is of a lighter-neutral hue.  What is great is that with one or two simple coats of paint, or re-clad you can recreate this design option quite easily yourself, in one weekend!

This example of a ’Dutch Apartment’ with coloured bricks/cladding is perfection!
